Primary Purpose

The Business Intelligence Manager applies business and advanced technical expertise in meeting business data and reporting needs. The position supports business planning by compiling, visualizing, and analyzing business and statistical data from UCW’s information systems. The Business Intelligence Manager liaises with various stakeholders across the university to provide them with the data, reporting, and analysis required to make informed data driven decisions.

The Business Intelligence Manager will work on projects that will have a big impact on student, faculty, and staff experience.

Specific Responsibilities

The Business Intelligence Manager will at various times be responsible for the following as well as other related duties as assigned to support the business objectives and purpose of the Company.

  • Responsible for designing and developing organization wide data analysis, data visualization and reporting services for internal and external audiences
  • Designs and conducts statistical analysis on organizational data to uncover trends and patterns in data. Recommends solutions to problems uncovered during the analysis.
  • Ensures that data and reporting are accessible to various stakeholders and helps them make data driven decisions
  • Responsible for understanding client ad-hoc data requirements and converting into reporting deliverables. Contributes to driving reporting automation to free up time for in-depth analyses.
  • Builds, mentors, and leads a small team of data professionals in providing business intelligence services to the various stakeholders.
  • Will lead the data team in building and maintaining an organization wide data warehouse which will ingest data from multiple data sources.
  • Recommends, develops, and implements procedures to ensure protection, accuracy, and integrity of data, including data monitoring and reconciliations. Research reasons for data anomalies and ensures appropriate corrections or adjustments are made.
  • Provides business and technical expertise on the analytics process; will research and recommend the use of various tools and applications in meeting data objectives.
  • Identifies opportunities that improve data accuracy and efficiency of our processes. Contributes to the development of training materials, documenting processes, and delivering training sessions to various stakeholders.
  • Will work closely with the senior management team at UCW and ensure that they have access to key data and metrics to make decisions.
  • Follows industry and internal reporting standards to ensure consistency and transparency across reports and adheres to privacy and confidentiality policies and measures to protect organizational data and information sources.

Position Requirements

Competencies:

  • Advanced MS office and MS Excel skills including Power Query, PowerPivot, and VBA.
  • Demonstrated experience working with MySQL databases.
  • Solid experience in creating data models and dashboards using Microsoft PowerBI.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of DAX functions.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing complex SQL queries to retrieve data.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting statistical analysis using techniques such as correlation, regression, clustering, hypothesis testing etc.
  • Experience in developing a data warehouse is required.
  • Experience in ETL processes is required.
  • Data analysis and visualization skills using Python and/or R an asset.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and data analysis skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and competing demands under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to ensure data privacy and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect data from a variety of sources, synthesize data, produce reports, and make recommendations.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related discipline
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working in an analytical and reporting capacity preferably in an education environment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in building and leading teams.
